Next year, the decision will be made regarding which city or region will host the Olympic Games, with the Rhine-Ruhr region in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) being a contender.

Workers' Safety Commission Urged to Present Radiation Risk Protections Directive Proposal

North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has declared its intent to host the Olympic Games, potentially in 2036, 2040, or 2044, focusing on a sustainability-driven approach and record-breaking attendance. The bid, supported by NRW's Minister President and local city leaders, aims to offer over ten million tickets for the competitions, a figure that would surpass historical records.

Key arguments for NRW's bid highlight the state's sports enthusiasm, record-breaking existing venues, and the sustainability of its concept, as approximately 95% of the required sports facilities already exist or would be temporarily erected or built. Only the athletics stadium and the Olympic village would need to be newly constructed, and the locations for these facilities are still under consideration, with potential candidates including Cologne and Essen.

The German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) will decide which candidate Germany will represent in the race, following a submission process that ends in May 2025. Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg are among the other major German cities also vying to host the games. The exact chances for NRW and the preferred hosting year are yet to be determined.

The bid from NRW follows a broader process spearheaded by the DOSB, with the aim of selecting a German candidate to present to the International Olympic Committee. The final decision on which city or region to put forward is expected by fall 2026.

NRW has published a comprehensive overview, detailing the cities and districts where the Olympic Games would take place, if the bid is successful. The full list, ranging from Aachen to Wuppertal, is available via the provided link.

As with previous bids, public engagement and approval are crucial factors in the selection process, and the DOSB is expected to seek the consent of the citizens. The emotionally charged bids of Munich for the Winter Olympics 2022 and Hamburg for the Summer Olympics 2024 were successfully blocked due to public disapproval.

Several cities and regions have presented bid concepts, each emphasizing their unique strengths. NRW's ambitious attendance targets and robust infrastructure present a compelling proposal, though competitors such as Berlin, with its multi-state partnership, Munich, and Hamburg also pose strong challenges in this crowded field. All candidates must secure public approval to advance in the selection process.

The bid for North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) to host the Olympic Games focuses on health-and-wellness through sports, backed by their extensive fitness-and-exercise facilities and record-breaking sports venues. In line with their sustainability-driven approach, NRW aims to incorporate science in the games, with approximately 95% of the required sports facilities already existing or temporarily erected or built.
