Dive Into Berlin & Brandenburg's Refreshing Swim Spots: "A Clean Splash Awaits!"

Water Safety Levels - 'Fit for Swimming' Reassessment - Water Qualification for Bathing - 'Suitable for Soaking'

Embrace the chill and take a dip! All 39 bathing spots in Berlin are ready for some splashin', says Alexander Straßmeir, the big boss at the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lageso). Good news for those craving a touch of the chilly waters, but not for the faint-hearted!

The bathing season stretches from May 15 to September 15. During this splash-tacular period, the Lageso inspects water samples from the swimming spots every 2 weeks, keeping an eye out for any lurking bacterial invaders. They also keep tabs on the green brigade, that is, the algae, particularly the toxic blue-green ones. Visit the Lageso website for regular updates on the H2O situation, complete with water temperature and visibility details.

Now, a word of caution: swimming isn't allowed at the Spree, canals, select parts of the Havel, harbors, under bridges, locks, ship moorings, and, you guessed it, ferries!

Brandenburg's swimming spots are a splash-hit too! According to the Brandenburg Ministry of the Environment, all 245 tested swimming spots are a go! The final verdict on five more spots is still in the works, as they're either brand-spanking-new or missing data. Water quality information can be found at all swimming spots, conveniently displayed on those handy info boards.

"Dive in and enjoy a dip in Brandenburg's open waters - unless the responsible authority issues a bathing ban due to, you know, water quality," the ministry explains.

Fun Fact: Did you know? The EU Bathing Water Directive, while not explicitly mentioned in the article, is the backbone of the water quality regulations across Europe. It sets standards for bathing water quality and requires member states to monitor and report on the quality of their swimming waters!

Quick Question: What crucial parameters does the EU Bathing Water Directive focus on when evaluating water quality? (Hint: Think gut bacteria!)

  1. The community policy should include strict adherence to the EU Bathing Water Directive's guidelines, ensuring a high standard of water quality in all swimming spots under Lageso and Brandenburg's jurisdiction.
  2. Health-and-wellness and fitness-and-exercise enthusiasts can find solace in the clean waters of Berlin and Brandenburg's swimming spots, as science plays a significant role in maintaining the water quality, with regular testing for harmful bacteria and algae, in alignment with the EU Bathing Water Directive.
