United Arab Emirates Amps Up Battle Against Childhood Overweight Conditions through Nationwide Strategies
In an ongoing effort to promote a healthier future for its children, the UAE's Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has partnered with various emirate-level health authorities to focus on improving school nutrition programs in 2024. These initiatives are designed to combat childhood obesity and align with the World Health Organization (WHO) framework.
The collaborative efforts involve the development and reinforcement of school nutrition guidelines aimed at promoting healthy eating habits among children. These guidelines cover nutritional value, sustainable and safe food, and creating healthier school environments. Although they are not yet comprehensive or part of a holistic national school health strategy, they represent a significant step towards fostering a healthier lifestyle in children.
MoHAP, Dubai Health Authority, Abu Dhabi Department of Health, Dubai Municipality, and the Ministry of Education have all contributed to harmonizing and improving nutrition standards in schools. These efforts are part of a broader National Nutrition Strategy that incorporates WHO frameworks but has yet to institute a unified, nationwide school nutrition policy.
In addition to these efforts, MoHAP has conducted training workshops to enhance staff competencies and standardize protocols for early detection of obesity indicators. The ministry has also signed an agreement with Novo Nordisk Pharma Gulf to develop a national scientific guide for obesity management and weight control.
To raise awareness about obesity's societal impact and promote long-term well-being, MoHAP, in collaboration with the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, hosted two specialized workshops: "Health-Promoting Schools" and "Essentials of Effective Health Communication for Managing Childhood Obesity."
The upcoming National Health and Nutrition Survey is expected to provide critical data on obesity rates in the UAE. The insights from this survey will help shape future health policies in the country.
Balanced nutrition in schools is being supported as part of the "Comprehensive School Health" project, designed to integrate health education into school environments in the UAE. While no new information about this project or the workshops hosted by MoHAP and the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean was found, it is clear that the UAE's commitment to combating childhood obesity remains strong.
The UAE's health authorities are also implementing nationwide programs that encourage physical activity from an early age. MoHAP will continue to roll out public awareness campaigns and community initiatives to combat childhood obesity, reinforcing its dedication to building a healthier future for its children.
