Tulsa Residents Urged to Prioritize Heating Safety as Temperatures Dip

Tulsa residents are urged to prioritise safety in their homes as temperatures dip below freezing. The City of Tulsa and local fire departments remind residents to use heating devices responsibly and follow safety guidelines.

Temperatures in Tulsa County have been fluctuating, with overnight lows dipping below freezing. While space heaters can provide additional warmth, they should not be used as the primary heat source. The Tulsa Fire Department and Building Department advise that space heaters are supplementary and should only be used to augment permanent heating systems.

It is crucial to ensure that heaters are safe for use. Before turning them on, residents should check for risks of fire, electric shock, and other hazards. Additionally, it is not safe to connect space heaters with extension cords. They should be plugged directly into a wall outlet.

Open flame gas heaters, if used, must be handled with care. They can be harmful if not used properly and may introduce carbon monoxide into the home. Gas and electric cooking stoves should never be used to heat a living space.

Space heaters should be kept at least three feet away from anything that can burn. Furthermore, the City of Tulsa code requires that heaters warm living spaces to a minimum of 65°F.
