In the ongoing crisis in Gaza, President Donald Trump has acknowledged the severity of the famine and the humanitarian crisis. During a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on July 28, Trump announced plans to set up food centers in Gaza, in cooperation with allies in Europe, promising to commit funds for food aid.

The World Food Programme (WFP) is currently distributing food aid, with around 3,500 metric tons of cargo ready to be distributed. However, only half of WFP’s requested convoys are approved to move cargo inside Gaza, and trucks often wait up to 46 hours before final permissions for travel are granted. The limited border crossings for aid cause bottlenecks, delays, and unsafe conditions.

Trump also urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to do more to deliver aid, expressing concern after seeing reports of starvation deaths and images of hungry children. Earlier, Trump had taken a harder stance on the conflict but recently appeared more inclined toward humanitarian action.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, on the other hand, has maintained a firm stance, emphasizing military action against Hamas and showing reluctance toward a ceasefire or relaxing restrictions. While the WFP is able to deliver some aid through approved crossings, Israel’s security considerations heavily influence the limited access granted for aid distribution.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi has publicly called on President Trump to intervene, urging him to stop the war, deliver aid, and end the suffering of people in Gaza. In a televised address, el-Sissi described Trump as the key figure capable of halting the conflict and facilitating humanitarian relief.

As the situation remains urgent and fragile, Keir Starmer, a UK leader, called the situation in Gaza "desperate" and said the U.K. supports statehood for the Palestinians but it must be part of a two-state solution. France has recently recognized a Palestinian state, but Trump stated that this "doesn't carry any weight."

Vice President JD Vance expressed concern over the humanitarian problem in Gaza and the number of starving children. Vance suggested that Israel needs to do more to allow aid into Gaza and that the U.S. should wage war on Hamas to prevent food from being blocked.

Images of emaciated children in Gaza have sparked renewed worries about hunger. The UN General Assembly is promoting a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict, but Israel and the U.S. are boycotting the two-day meeting.
