The Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital in Rome is currently offering medical care to 20 children from Gaza, who have been transferred since the conflict began in October 2023. The hospital, guided by the mission entrusted to it by the Holy See, continues to admit new patients, including a 6-month-old infant with a previous amputation, a 13-year-old boy with traumatic brain injury, and a 2-year-old girl suffering from celiac disease and malnutrition.

These children from Gaza present with a wide range of severe and diverse medical conditions, reflecting the dire health situation in Gaza. The hospital is treating a variety of pathologies, including amputations and trauma-related injuries, burns, malnutrition and metabolic disorders, cancers, heart diseases, infectious diseases, neurological disorders, and celiac disease.

Tiziano Onesti, president of the Pediatric Hospital Bambino Gesù, emphasizes the importance of expertise and humanity in their work. He stresses that compassion cannot stop at sentiment, but must become concrete action. The hospital strives to provide comprehensive care regardless of religion or wealth, aiming to offer not only medical treatment but also a safe and peaceful environment for the children and their families.

The families accompany the children to offer a safer environment and ongoing support during treatment. Beyond Bambino Gesù, Italy is actively evacuating and providing hospital care to Palestinian children as part of larger humanitarian airlifts. A recent operation brought 31 children from Gaza to various Italian hospitals, including Bambino Gesù.

Since the beginning of the conflict in October 2023, Bambino Gesù has taken in 20 minors from Gaza. Each child's journey is expected to be challenging, but they will not face it alone, as they will have the hospital community's support. The hospital's actions are motivated by the fragile lives carrying both pain and hope that they encounter when welcoming children from war-torn areas.

The inspiration for the hospital's actions comes from Pope Leo XIV's words on the drama of war-affected populations. The hospital's mission, entrusted by the Holy See since always, is to remind people that compassion cannot stop at sentiment, but must become concrete action. The children from Gaza are receiving multidisciplinary care including surgery, neurology, general pediatrics, and oncology.
