Tennis star Monica Seles remains resilient in the face of illness, not letting it impede her spirit on court.
Monica Seles, the former tennis player known for her fierce competitiveness, has revealed that she has been diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis (MG), a neuromuscular autoimmune disease.
In an Instagram post, Seles shared that she initially struggled to cope with the diagnosis, as the symptoms she experienced, including extreme weakness in her legs and arms, and double vision, were very unusual for her as a professional athlete who was familiar with her body.
Seles described her battle with MG as a new opponent, likening it to the tough competitions she faced on the tennis court. She admitted that learning to cope and live with MG was a difficult time, but she has since adapted to a "new normal" that involves careful planning for everyday activities and managing physical limitations caused by muscle weakness.
Traveling has become challenging for Seles due to the disease, but she has not let it deter her. In her Instagram post, she mentioned that she is part of a sponsorship deal and that she would not give up. She likened her approach to her tennis career, saying that she would keep fighting and never give up.
Seles wants to raise awareness about MG and educate the public about the disease. She has been open about her condition and has spoken about it in interviews, highlighting the realities of living with MG and promoting programs aimed at empowerment and proactive health management for those affected by the disease.
Seles is also active in the MG-United community, which provides resources and connection opportunities for people with MG. By sharing her journey and offering hope to newly diagnosed patients, she hopes to inspire others to not give up and to find the strength to live with MG.
Myasthenia gravis causes a disruption in the transmission of signals between nerves and muscles, leading to muscle weakness and fatigue. Seles hopes that by speaking out about her own experience with the disease, she can help to raise awareness and encourage others to seek help if they are experiencing similar symptoms.
