Sweden Speeds Up PhD Residency Permits: New 30-Day Track

Sweden's Migration Agency has announced changes to streamline the process for PhD students applying for residency permits. The agency aims to reduce processing times, following a successful model used for work permits. The new system is designed to be more predictable and transparent.

The Migration Agency has created a dedicated section on its website for researchers and PhD students. This section provides guidance on submitting complete applications, which will qualify them for a 30-day track. The agency aims to increase the proportion of complete cases, aiming to shorten processing times from the early stages of the application process.

The new model for handling PhD student permits is based on a successful process for work permits introduced in 2024. This change follows a similar reduction in processing times for work permits in 2023. The agency has not specified the name of the head who announced these changes.

The Migration Agency's new process for PhD student residency permits aims to make the application process more predictable and transparent. With a focus on complete applications and a successful model from work permits, the agency seeks to reduce processing times. The changes follow the government's order to shorten processing times and increase decisions within the statutory time frame.
