Catching Tiger Mosquitoes Before They Catch Us: Lower Saxony's Expanded Monitoring Efforts

Public Health Department Widens Surveillance of Tigera Mosquitoes - Surveillance of Tiger Mosquitoes Expansion by Health Department

Gear up, folks! The Lower Saxony State Health Authority (LSA) is stepping up its game against the notorious Asian Tiger Mosquito. These daytime-aggressive invaders are known carriers of potentially harmful viruses like Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika.

To get the upper hand on these relentless critters, the LSA is setting up eight mosquito traps across various locations in the north, aiming to detect them early and thwart any potential disease outbreaks. Sonja Wolken, a specialist physician from the LSA, encourages everyone to lend a helping hand: "Spot a suspicious specimen? Feel free to send it our way, or snap a photo and share it with us!"

Think you've stumbled upon a tiger mosquito colony? Keep an eye out for the striped leg pattern that distinguishes these pesky buggers from the common house mosquito. Up close and in good light, you'll see their legs adorned with black and white stripes. But don't confuse their bold attire with the common house mosquito, which boasts clearly visible, brown and white striped legs. annoyed by mosquitoes even during the day, a sign of a potential tiger mosquito infestation.

So, what's the best defense against these daytime marauders?

  1. Promote natural predators: Dragonflies, water beetles, water bugs, and other insects are nature's little mosquito hunters. Encourage these heroes in your garden to help keep tiger mosquito populations in check.
  2. Eliminate breeding sites: Tiger mosquitoes love to lay their eggs in the tiniest water accumulations. Be sure to regularly check and clean items like watering cans, buckets, and flower pots.
  3. Prevent population growth: Ensure standing water like birdbaths or kiddie pools are changed at least once a week. Design garden ponds in a natural manner to create a welcoming environment for these helpful hunters.

Remember, while these viruses aren't currently circulating in Germany, they can be carried by travelers returning from infected regions. To minimize the risk, let's work together to control tiger mosquito populations and maintain mosquito-free zones. Stay vigilant, stay informed, and stay healthy!
