Summer brakes are no place for shoes, ADAC explains due to safety concerns associated with the materials and designs causing slippery conditions and potential accidents.

As the sun shines bright across Hesse and Thuringia, sun worshipers are venturing out, but safety on the road should not be overlooked. The Automobile Club of the German States (ADAC) Hesse-Thuringia is reminding drivers of the importance of prioritizing safety over comfort when choosing footwear for their journeys.

According to ADAC, drivers should opt for shoes that offer grip and safety while driving, avoiding footwear that is too wide or may easily come off, such as flip-flops. Wearing such shoes can potentially lead to accidents if they get lodged in the footwell, blocking the pedals during a drive.

Barefoot driving, another common practice during the summer heat, can also increase the risk of accidents. ADAC spokesman, Oliver Reidegeld, explains that driving barefoot can result in delayed braking due to the inability to apply necessary pressure on the pedals quickly enough.

Moreover, an incorrect seating position can impair the driver's ability to reach controls comfortably and maintain full control, potentially increasing reaction times and reducing visibility. It is crucial to ensure that the seat is adjusted properly and the seat belt is worn correctly.

In a crash at 64 km/h, the legs resting on the dashboard are thrown towards the upper body, causing the driver to be folded like a pocket knife. Not only is putting feet on the dashboard dangerous, but it can also result in severe head injuries and serious fractures of the lower extremities and the pelvis.

ADAC also advises against leaning the seat back too far or having an incorrectly positioned belt, as these can have serious consequences in case of an accident.

It is important to note that while it is not illegal to drive with flip-flops, sandals, or even barefoot, the risk of accidents can significantly increase. Some comprehensive insurances may reduce or refuse benefits due to "gross negligence" in certain cases.

To mitigate these risks, drivers can bring a pair of sneakers in the trunk as a backup for driving and change shoes before the drive. This simple precaution can help ensure a safer journey for everyone on the road.

In conclusion, driving safety is crucial during the summer heat, and ADAC Hesse-Thuringia encourages drivers to prioritize safety over comfort to help reduce the risk of accidents.
