In the global fight against COVID-19, two dominant variants, Stratus (XFG) and Nimbus (NB.1.8.1), are currently causing concern. These strains, first identified in 2025, are becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide, particularly in the United States.

The Stratus strain, a combination of F.7 and LP.8.1.2 lineages, has rapidly grown from no reported cases early in 2025 to dominance by mid-year in the U.S. It is highly transmissible and has a moderate level of viral activity. On the other hand, Nimbus, currently dominant in some regions such as California, is associated with intense throat symptoms and is also highly transmissible but not causing increased severity.

In the U.S., Stratus is detected in wastewater in at least 30 states and likely present in 45 states, with rising cases everywhere. Nimbus remains widespread, though Stratus is the fastest-growing strain nationally.

However, when it comes to Ukraine, there is no specific data available about the prevalence or impact of these variants. Given their noted global spread, it is plausible that these variants are present in Ukraine as well, but there is no publicly available detailed epidemiological data from Ukraine on these strains as of now.

In Ukraine, the number of COVID-19 cases has increased, according to routine surveillance system data. The Acting Director General of the Center for Public Health, Alexei Danilenko, confirmed this report. Last week, there was a 37% increase in the number of COVID-19 cases compared to the previous week, with 684 cases recorded.

The increase in COVID-19 cases during the summer period is similar to the trend observed in the past year. Most cases of Stratus infection result in symptoms affecting the upper respiratory tract, such as hoarseness. The current increase in COVID-19 cases does not cause excessive strain on the medical system in Ukraine.

It's important to note that vaccination remains an important preventive measure. Available vaccines are expected to cover these subvariants, and health authorities recommend vaccination especially for high-risk groups including children and pregnant individuals, although guidance varies by region.

In summary, the Stratus and Nimbus variants are spreading globally and are currently two of the dominant COVID-19 variants. While there is no specific data on these variants' presence in Ukraine, it is plausible that they are present due to their global spread. Vaccination remains the most effective protection against COVID-19, and high-risk groups are encouraged to get vaccinated.

  1. The Stratus and Nimbus variants, being highly transmissible and dominating in various regions worldwide, have also potentially impacted health-and-wellness in Ukraine, although specific data on their prevalence is unavailable.
  2. As the number of COVID-19 cases in Ukraine increases, with the current trend showing a 37% surge last week, an understanding of the medical-conditions associated with the dominant strains, such as Stratus, becomes increasingly crucial for health-and-wellness strategies and public health intervention.
