STIKO Advises COVID-19 and Influenza Boosters for At-Risk Groups in Hesse

The Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) has advised that people in Hesse at higher risk should get both a COVID-19 and influenza booster during the 2024/25 winter season. This comes as flu cases have surged since the COVID-19 pandemic, reaching 20,963 cases last season.

STIKO recommends the COVID-19 booster for those aged 60 and above, with underlying health conditions, or at exposure risk. These groups include the elderly, those with chronic illnesses, healthcare workers, and those in close contact with vulnerable populations. While exact details for 2024/25 in Hesse were not specified, the committee advises an annual COVID-19 booster for older adults and those at higher risk.

Other protective measures include staying home when sick, avoiding contact with vulnerable people, wearing masks, and regular hand washing. Infections with influenza viruses, pneumococci, RSV, or SARS-CoV-2 can lead to serious health problems and be life-threatening, particularly for older and chronically ill people. STIKO recommends an RSV vaccine for people over 75, those with pre-existing conditions, and newborns and infants. Meanwhile, those over 60 or with pre-existing conditions should get vaccinated against pneumococci.

Health Minister Diana Stolz has stressed the importance of vaccination for at-risk groups to protect against severe illness. The flu vaccine is recommended by STIKO for people over 60, vulnerable groups, nursing home residents, and pregnant women after the second trimester. With flu cases on the rise, it is crucial for those eligible to get vaccinated to help prevent the spread and protect the most vulnerable.
