Football Professional Fridolin Wagner Saves a Life Through Stem Cell Donation

Football professional Fridolin Wagner from VfL Osnabrück recently made a heroic act by donating stem cells, potentially saving the life of a person suffering from blood cancer. The donation took place at Leipzig University Hospital on Monday, July 28th.

Every twelve minutes, a person in Germany receives a blood cancer diagnosis, and a stem cell transplant is often their only chance of survival. Wagner registered to donate stem cells years ago through his wife, and the request for him to donate came from DKMS in early 2022.

To become a potential stem cell donor in Germany, you should join a donor registry such as DKMS. The registration process is quick and easy, typically involving a cheek swab or mouth swab to collect cells for tissue typing. You can register online through DKMS’s website, or sometimes in person at events or local offices that help mobilize donor registrations.

When a match is found with a patient, donors are contacted and asked if they can proceed to donate stem cells. The donation process typically takes three to five hours, during which the stem cells were extracted via a peripheral stem cell harvest, a process similar to dialysis. Approximately 300 milliliters of stem cells and some blood plasma were obtained during the procedure.

International registry rules require anonymity between donor and recipient for two years, after which contact may be possible with consent. Registering with DKMS or a similar registry in Germany is how people like Fridolin Wagner become donors and help save lives of patients with blood cancers and other diseases.

DKMS has registered over 12.5 million potential stem cell donors, expanding the worldwide community of stem cell donors. By registering with DKMS, you can potentially save a life.
