Seven fatalities reported due to West Nile virus in Greece

The West Nile virus has become a public health concern in Greece, with infections being reported in rural areas around the capital Athens and Central Greece, according to the health authority.

The virus is primarily transmitted by mosquitoes of the genus Culex, with Culex pipiens being a key vector that transfers the virus from birds to humans. The current temperatures in Greece, around 32 degrees Celsius, are favorable for the spread of the virus.

So far, six patients with West Nile virus infection have had to be treated in clinics, with three of them requiring intensive care. Unfortunately, seven people have died this year from the virus, all of whom were over 65 years old. By September 17, 68 cases of central nervous system infection by the West Nile virus had been confirmed.

However, many infected individuals with the West Nile virus do not develop any symptoms or only experience mild ones such as headache and muscle pain. This means that the actual number of infected people may be higher than the reported cases.

To prevent the spread of the virus, doctors advise using mosquito repellent and, whenever possible, using mosquito nets over beds. The heat is ideal for the mosquitoes that transmit the West Nile virus, making it essential to take precautions to protect oneself.

The West Nile virus infections primarily occur in older people or those with pre-existing conditions, causing severe cases with high fever. Therefore, the virus is a concern for older adults, particularly those over 65.

As the West Nile virus continues to spread in Greece, it is crucial for the public to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their loved ones.
