Serial Pedophile Convicted for Assaulting 111 Individuals, to Serve Two Decades in French Prison
Former French surgeon, Joël Le Scouarnec, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for committing heinous sexual crimes against 299 children over a 25-year period. The trial, which lasted three months, was concluded on May 28, 2025, in the criminal court of Morbihan, Brittany.
Le Scouarnec, who had previously been convicted in 2020 for the rape and sexual assault of four children, including his nieces, was found guilty of 111 counts of rape and 188 counts of sexual assault. Most of his victims were hospital patients, primarily boys and girls under the age of 12 who were unconscious or sedated during the assaults.
In court, Le Scouarnec admitted to the charges and accepted responsibility for the harm he inflicted on his victims and their families. He was sentenced to serve a minimum of two-thirds of his 20-year sentence, the maximum penalty for aggravated rape under French law.
Prosecutors had requested a special provision to place Le Scouarnec in a supervised center upon his release due to the high risk of reoffending. However, the court declined this request.
Despite the severity of his crimes, which are considered one of the worst and most extensive child abuse cases in France's history, Le Scouarnec's sentence runs concurrently with his previous 15-year term. This means he will serve the 20 years only after completing his existing prison term.
The trial has raised significant attention to the failure to detect and stop Le Scouarnec's abuses earlier, highlighting the vulnerability of children in hospital settings and the importance of ensuring their safety.
