Russian Divers Master Icy Waters in Winter Rescue Drills

Russian emergency responders, known as EMERCOM, recently conducted underwater diving exercises in the icy waters of Malaya Lagernaya Bay, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The drills, involving divers from specialized fire-rescue and search-and-rescue units, tested their skills in challenging winter conditions.

Divers, equipped with gear weighing 45-50 kg, practiced dives up to 60 meters, extending to 80 meters in emergency scenarios. They honed skills like searching in zero visibility, navigating underwater, and checking radio communication equipment. Working divers went underwater, while support divers assisted from the shore using signal lines. One task focused on signaling between working and support divers.

The divers, trained year-round, faced unique challenges in winter. Cold temperatures and ice risks demanded their expertise in handling emergencies such as ice rescues and body recovery. They also practiced propeller untangling, demonstrating their versatility in underwater operations.
