Federal Government Appoints Virologist Streeck as Drug Czar

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Hendrik Streeck, a renowned virologist, has been appointed as the Federal Government Commissioner for Addiction and Drug Issues in Germany. The announcement was made by Health Minister Nina Warken.

Streeck, a CDU MP and a popular science figure, expressed his intentions to help, inform, and act rather than gesture-making. His primary focus will be on providing better protection for children and young people from addiction, digital risks, and new harmful substances.

Previously a professor and the director of the Institute of Virology at the University Hospital Bonn, Streeck was only recently elected to the Bundestag on February 23. He succeeds the SPD politician Burkhard Blienert, who previously held the position.

The cabinet also appointed Katrin Staffler, a CSU MP, as the new long-term care commissioner. Stefan Schwartze, an SPD MP, remained the patient commissioner, a role he also held during the previous legislative period.

Minister Warken emphasized the importance of collaboration with all those affected in health policy, stating that Streeck's medical background would help depolarize the often emotionally charged drug debate. A significant issue in this legislative period could be the handling of the legalization of cannabis, with Union and SPD planning an "open-ended evaluation" this fall.

The challenges facing Streeck include navigating Germany's Cannabis Act (CanG) and other drug policies, promoting comprehensive public health initiatives addressing addiction, and collaborating with other commissioners to address digital risks and emerging substances effectively. His role is expected to drive national standards and policy coherence across all federal states, ensuring integration between addiction treatment services and patient advocacy.
