Ukrainian Workers Repairing Damaged Chornobyl Nuclear Plant Amidst Ongoing Threats

The construction crew at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is carrying on with repairs on the damaged containment structure, following a Russian drone attack earlier this year, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi revealed.

According to the IAEA, a Russian drone strike on 14th February created a huge hole in the major containment structure at the Chornobyl NPP. This vital structure was designed to contain radioactive releases from the 1986 reactor catastrophe and also protect the site from external threats.

After several weeks of battling the fire and smoldering at the facility, the IAEA team stationed at the Chornobyl NPP recently inspected the site.

Grossi declared, "The site currently focuses its efforts on assessing the full extent of the damage while simultaneously conducting short-term repairs. It is evident that the containment structure, built at an immense cost and with substantial international assistance, experienced extensive damage."

Although Grossi stressed that no radioactive release had transpired due to the damage and the containment structure continues to perform its protective function, the future repairs are anticipated to be costly and may necessitate substantial international donor support.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that a Russian strike drone, carrying a high-explosive incendiary warhead, struck the shelter of Unit No 4 at the Chornobyl NPP on the night of 13-14 February. Early estimates pointed towards significant damage to the shelter, the president stated.
