Covid-19 Numbers on the Rise in Hong Kong, With Older Adults Being Impacted Most

Hong Kong's Covid-19 numbers have seen a significant increase over the past month, hitting a yearly high, and a total of 30 deaths have been recorded. This comes despite claims that the virus has become less severe overall.

On Thursday, the Centre for Health Protection reported a jump in the proportion of respiratory samples testing positive, to 13.7% compared to just 6.2% in late April. This is the highest rate since the same time last year.

Additionally, an increase in positive samples from sewage tests and visits to clinics and public hospitals for Covid-related symptoms has been observed, indicating widespread community transmission.

Edwin Tsui Lok-kin, the centre's controller, stated that, based on past data, they anticipated Covid-19 activities to remain high at least for the next few weeks.

In the past four weeks, 30 deaths were reported among 81 severe adult cases. The centre's investigation revealed that 83% of these severe cases involved individuals aged 65 or above, and over 90% had pre-existing health conditions.

The rising cases have led to increased public concern, affecting various sectors and prompting event cancellations in some cases.

While the virus may seem less severe for most, it continues to take a toll primarily on the older population with pre-existing conditions. This trend is likely due to insufficient booster vaccination rates among these vulnerable groups.

Health authorities emphasize the importance of maintaining vigilance, boosting personal hygiene, and accelerating vaccination, particularly among susceptible demographics.

  1. Science shows that older adults in Hong Kong with pre-existing medical conditions are disproportionately affected by Covid-19, with recent data revealing that over 83% of severe cases involve individuals aged 65 or above who have underlying health issues.
  2. In the realm of health and wellness, it is crucial to prioritize vaccination and adhere to hygiene standards, especially among vulnerable demographics, as the ongoing surge in Covid-19 cases continues to primarily impact older populations with pre-existing conditions.
