Recipient of the Federal Cross of Merit honored at Bremen City Hall.
Marie-Luise Zimmer, a remarkable figure in Bremen's healthcare scene, has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit by the Federal President. The honour was bestowed upon her by Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte on May 27.
Born in 1943, Zimmer's career in healthcare began in the 1970s when she founded the Free Music School for early musical education. Her passion for music extended to her work as a music therapist, where she made significant contributions to neonatology. From 1997 to 2010, Zimmer worked in the Neonatology Department of Bremen-Mitte Hospital, pioneering the use of auditory stimulation, which employs the mother's voice, to aid extremely premature children. This method has since become a widely recognised music therapeutic technique in neonatology across Germany.
Zimmer's dedication didn't stop at the hospital walls. Recognising the need to support "healthy" children and adolescents feeling helpless, insecure, and isolated, she established the PEGASUS e.V. in 2003. This preventive offer aims to strengthen the mental health of children and adolescents affected by various circumstances, including cancer. Zimmer's tireless efforts in organising benefit concerts and handling financial sponsorship opportunities played a crucial role in the existence and attention of the support association Pegasus - Bremen.
Zimmer's commitment to supporting children and adolescents affected by cancer has been recognised for over 20 years. Her expertise in the field led her to speak at numerous congresses on the topic of "children of cancer parents". In 2008, she founded the Stiftung Kinder krebskranker Angehöriger Bremen in cooperation with the Bremer Krebsgesellschaft to provide further support for children and adolescents from families with cancer-affected parents or siblings.
Today, there are interest groups and activities in over 40 cities across Germany that deal with supporting children and adolescents from families with cancer, an idea initially carried by Marie-Luise Zimmer. The Mayor warmly congratulated Zimmer on this well-deserved award, acknowledging her personal commitment as the driving force behind the success and growth of the PEGASUS e.V. and the Stiftung Kinder krebskranker Angehöriger Bremen.
