In a heartfelt message posted on the Sabres' official website, Rasmus Dahlin, the team's captain, shared the news of his fiancée, Carolina Matovac, undergoing a lifesaving heart transplant over the summer.

Dahlin, who is 25 years old and entering his eighth NHL season, expressed his gratitude towards the NHL, NHL Players' Association, the Sabres, and his agent Craig Oster for their unwavering support during this challenging time.

The couple's ordeal began during a vacation in France, where Matovac fell ill for several days. Her heart failed, and she required CPR on multiple occasions, with each session lasting up to a couple of hours. After weeks on life support, Matovac received a new heart.

Dahlin thanked NHLPA physician Scott Delaney for overseeing plans on Matovac's medical treatment and offering comfort to the couple's relatives. He also acknowledged the doctors and staff at several hospitals in France and Sweden where Matovac was treated, as well as the Hogsbo Rehabilitation Center in Sweden where she is currently undergoing her rehabilitation.

In the message, Dahlin wrote that Matovac has demonstrated an incredible determination, spirit, positivity, and resilience throughout her journey. The couple hopes to reflect on the fortunate experiences they share every day. Meanwhile, Dahlin has topped 50 points in each of his past four NHL seasons and was selected first overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2018 draft.
