Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft, is revving up his philanthropic efforts by planning to distribute his wealth more swiftly than initially intended. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, established 25 years ago, is now targeting a closure date of 2045, aiming to distribute a whopping $200 billion in the next two decades.
The Gates Foundation, a global powerhouse in philanthropy, focuses on uplifting global health, extinguishing extreme poverty, uprooting infectious diseases, and promoting education. By funding initiatives such as vaccination programs, the foundation strives to bridge the gap in these critical areas.
"It's high time we tackled those pressing issues with the urgency they demand. That's why I've decided to expedite my philanthropic endeavors," Gates revealed in a statement.
By the end of the next 20 years, Gates intends to donate nearly all of his wealth through the Gates Foundation. "I don't want to be remembered as a man who hoarded wealth while countless struggles for survival. I want to be known as a man who leveraged his fortune to bring change," he added.
The Seattle-based billionaire made this decision amid a series of milestones, such as the 25th anniversary of the foundation, his father's centennial birthday, Microsoft's 50th birthday, and his own 70th birthday in October.
The foundation's board has approved the accelerated timeline, modifying the bylaws that once stated the organization would dissolve 20 years after Gates' demise. The promised funds surpass the current foundation's assets, with the remainder coming from Gates' personal wealth over time.
In the next two decades, the foundation anticipates doubling its spending compared to the first 25 years, which totaled over $100 billion "thanks in part to the generosity of Warren Buffett." The actual amount will depend on market fluctuations and inflation, and Gates anticipates the foundation to disburse over $200 billion by 2045. The foundation will formally close its doors on December 31, 2045.
