Quadruplet woman welcomes quintuplets as her first babies
El Paso Woman Gives Birth to Quintuplets at Las Palmas Medical Center
Theresa Troia, a 36-year-old woman from El Paso, Texas, recently made headlines as she welcomed quintuplets into the world. The birth, which took place at Las Palmas Medical Center, marked a historic moment for the hospital.
Troia, who is a quadruplet herself with three brothers, Joseph Troia, Matthew Troia, and Thomas Troia, shared that the birth was both surreal and beautiful, creating an instant family. The quintuplets were delivered via cesarean section on June 3.
Two of the quintuplets, Isabella and Viviana, are monochorionic-diamniotic (Mo-Di) twins. The presence of Mo-Di twins among quintuplets adds complexity but does not preclude good survival if detected and managed carefully.
Preterm quintuplets born at 28 weeks, including those who are Mo-Di twins, face significant risks. However, survival and good development are possible with high-level neonatal intensive care (NICU). This is evidenced by a recent real-world example where a mother delivered quintuplets at 28 weeks and one day, including a pair of identical Mo-Di twins. Ten weeks later, three of the quintuplets had already been discharged from the NICU and all were reported to be healthy and growing well, showing no obvious lasting effects of their extreme prematurity.
The Las Palmas Medical Center has a Level III neonatal intensive care unit equipped to manage high-risk, complex pregnancies. Dr. Aaron Poole, an OB-GYN and maternal-fetal medicine specialist, delivered the quintuplets.
Troia's pregnancy was not without its challenges. She experienced bleeding during her first trimester, but her pregnancy overall went well. She did not undergo any fertility treatments. Troia learned she would be having quintuplets in January and was excited to live out her dream of being a mom, despite the loss of her own mother 10 years ago.
Ten weeks after the birth, three of the quintuplets (Kyla, Isabella, and Jaxon) have been discharged from the hospital NICU. The quintuplets are currently doing well and growing healthily, and Troia is excited to care for them. The Troia quintuplets are the first set of quintuplets born at the El Paso hospital.
Despite the challenges, Troia does not have anyone to discuss her pregnancy with, as her mother is deceased. However, she is grateful for the support she has received from her family, friends, and the medical team at Las Palmas Medical Center.
