Psychiatrists Speculate: Escaped Mental Health Patients Might Be Involved in Criminal Activities

In a daring escape, three criminals managed to break out of the Clinic for Forensic Psychiatry in Zwiefalten, Germany, using a bed frame as a battering ram. The prisoners, aged 30, 32, and 38, hailing from Greece, Turkey, and Italy, had been convicted for robbery and were housed in the crisis area of the clinic, which was considered escape-proof.

At 8:15 PM on Saturday, the criminals dismantled a bed frame and used it to force open doors and barriers, breaking through the security measures. They had cleverly hidden the part of the wall they were preparing for penetration behind a heating body, which they kept pushing back.

The escape caused a large-scale manhunt, but the criminals remained at large until Monday. The clinic management fears they could commit criminal acts to obtain drugs or other substances, as they were classified as severely drug and alcohol dependent.

The incident has left the town of Zwiefalten in a state of shock. While some find the story amusing, others are afraid of the potential consequences. The escape is the talk of the town, with many discussing the ingenuity of the inmates and the potential lapses in security protocols within the psychiatric facility.

Details like the exact methods used by the criminals to hollow out the 40-centimeter-thick outer wall are still under investigation. However, it is known that they used makeshift tools, including bed frame hinges and chairs, in their escape. The construction waste from the hollowed-out wall filled two buckets and was found under the criminals' beds.

Interestingly, no fire was found in the affected room despite the fire alarm. The escaping hot steam from the heating system triggered the alarm. There was an abundance of heating water in the room, but no patients remained in the room during the escape.

Additional measures have been taken after several escapes from psychiatric institutions in Baden-Württemberg since 2012. The authorities are currently working to ensure the safety and security of the clinic and the surrounding area.
