Pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk shrinks its American sales force dedicated to obesity and diabetes instruction: Report by Reuters
In a significant move, Danish pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk (NVO) has announced a comprehensive restructuring plan, effective immediately, with the aim of regaining its competitive edge against industry rival Eli Lilly (LLY). The announcement was made on September 9, 2025.
At the heart of this restructuring is a cost-cutting measure that involves the termination of 9,000 jobs by the end of 2026. This includes the layoff of its U.S. sales team focused on obesity and diabetes education for healthcare providers, as well as the termination of roles for several hundred employees within a team known as cardiometabolic educators.
The layoffs are part of a broader strategy under the leadership of the company's new CEO, Maziar Mike Doustdar. The restructuring is expected to yield annual savings from 2027 onwards.
This move comes as Novo Nordisk has lost dominance in the U.S. weight loss drug market, a trend that has contributed to a significant loss in market value. Since mid-2024, the company has lost over $400 billion in market value.
The layoffs signal Novo Nordisk's effort to streamline its operations and focus on core areas of its business. Despite these challenging times, the company has assured that the affected employees will be paid until the end of the year.
The restructuring is a bold step towards revitalising Novo Nordisk's position in the industry. The company is hopeful that these changes will help it regain its competitive edge and secure a stronger future.
