Orangutan Ejde, a Favorite at Rostock Zoo, Passes Away
Rostock Zoo's Resident Orangutan, Ede, Has Passed Away Following a 30-year Occupancy - Orangutan Ejde, a resident of Rostock Zoo for over three decades, has passed away.
Hey there! Got some sad news, mates. The super old, super cool orangutan named Ejde from Rostock Zoo has keeled over, they announced recently. Ejde, at 44 years, had been with the zoo for over 30 years, and had been battling a chronic respiratory condition that took a turn for the worse. They zapped him on Saturday.
Born in a Danish zoo way back in July 1980, this Bornean orangutan moved to Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna when he was nine. Through a European breeding program, he made his way to Rostock in 1993. "It's a heavy blow," said the zoo's boss Antje Angeli. "Ejde was a prime spokesbeast for his critically endangered species for years."
His little ones are still hangin' around in Rostock
The Bornean orangutan is one of the three remaining orangutan species, and they're in deep trouble due to habitat loss. Despite living only 35-40 years in the wild, they usually live longer in human care. The oldest known gal was born in 1962.
All five of Ejde's kiddos were born right here in Rostock Zoo. Daughter Mayang (born 2018) and sons Bayu (2020) and Sabas (2003) are still swinging it up there today.
