Ohio Reports First 2025 Measles Case in Ashtabula County
Ohio State has reported its first measles case of 2025 in Ashtabula County. The unvaccinated adult patient had contact with a recent international traveller. Health officials are tracing possible exposures, emphasising the importance of vaccination to prevent spread.
Measles is highly contagious, transmitted through coughing and sneezing. The CDC recommends two doses of the vaccine for all children. In 2022, Ohio State experienced 90 measles cases. Without vaccination, nine out of ten exposed individuals will become infected. Adults born after 1957 without vaccination should also get vaccinated.
Ashtabula County health officials, along with the Ohio Department of Health, are coordinating efforts to trace possible exposures. The Director of the Ashtabula County Health Department, Doug Starkey, is likely involved. Despite recent outbreaks, this is the first case in Ohio State in 2025.
Measles can have serious health consequences but is preventable through vaccination. Ohio State health officials urge residents to ensure their vaccination status, especially adults born after 1957. Tracing efforts continue to minimise the risk of further spread.
