Fresh Take: Strict Vigilance Encouraged as New Covid-19 Variants Dominate Thailand

============================================

Got your attention, folks? Let me fill you in on the latest! A doc over at Chula Uni's Med School has got everyone's ear buzzing about new Covid-19 strains causing chaos in Thailand.

Covid-19 Hits the Top Spot for Illnesses and Fatalities

ASSOC PROF DR THIRA, a Chulalongkorn University lecturer, dropped a bomb on us last week. Over the past month and week, Covid-19 has been the number one culprit for Thais falling ill and kicking the bucket. Compared to other diseases, Covid-19 leaves other illnesses in the dust.

Here's a quick break-down: In the past month, roughly 170,000 folks landed in hospital beds due to Covid-19, resulting in 37 deaths. Meanwhile, the flu didn't even crack the top ten, with a single death reported during the same period.

From 18th to 24th May, Covid-19 cases numbered five times more than diarrhea, ten times higher than influenza, and a whopping thirty times more than food poisoning cases.

Covid-19 Still a Force to be Reckoned With

ASSOC PROF DR THIRA made it clear that just because Covid-19 has shifted from pandemic to endemic, doesn't mean we should play it cool. He emphasized that Covid-19 is not your everyday cold and typically doesn't cause the same mild symptoms as influenza.

SARS-CoV-2 Keeps on Changing

The Covid-19 virus, a beast known as SARS-CoV-2, is always evolving and trying new tricks up its sleeve. Look out for the LP.8.1 and NB.1.8.1 variants, currently under watch by the WHO.

LP.8.1, now accounting for about 39% of infections across 51 countries, has some significant amino acid changes in its Spike protein. You might be wondering what that's about? This variant shows strong humoral immune evasion and a significant growth advantage over other JN.1-derived sublineages.

On the other hand, NB.1.8.1 is on the rise, with a 10.7% infection rate in 22 countries. It's classified as a 'variant under monitoring' by the WHO due to its higher growth advantage compared to LP.8.1 and its immunity resistance.
