Month Focused on Mental Health: Bolstering Personal Resilience
Recognizing October as Mental Health Awareness Month, We Delve into Ways to Foster Personal Resilience
In the spirit of supporting mental health, we sought the insights of admired leaders on their strategies for cultivating resilience, a crucial component for navigating life's challenges.
The American Psychological Association defines resilience as the successful adaptation to difficult life experiences. It is a dynamic process characterized by mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility. Arianna Huffington eloquently comments, "Resilience is not an end state; it's a constant process of becoming."
When faced with adversity, resilience allows one to persevere and find joy in life while managing stress more effectively. But is personal resilience something that can be developed and honed?
Historical leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, and Anne Frank have demonstrated remarkable resilience in overcoming significant obstacles. Their resilience shines through their perseverance and the positive change they inspired. Asking leaders we admire to share their insights, we posed the question: "What can we do to foster our personal resilience?"
Arianna Huffington, Founder and CEO of Thrive Global, generously shared her wisdom, offering more than three strategies:
- Prioritize sleep, aiming for 7-9 hours each night.
- Incorporate daily moments of conscious breathing, gratitude, or stretching, aiding the transition from the sympathetic to the parasympathetic nervous system.
- Make time for activities that bring joy and connect with nature, if possible.
- Regularly phone friends, instead of sending emails, to maintain close connections.
- Implement a social media cutoff time, and curb it earlier if the urge to 'doom scroll' arises.
- Volunteer regularly to give back to the community.
- Express gratitude before bedtime by writing down three things one is thankful for.
- Practice habit stacking, linking three things one is grateful for to a routine, such as brushing teeth.
A common thread emerges from these insights: the emphasis on cultivating confidence, the power of simplicity, and the holistic integration of well-being practices. As we mark October as Mental Health Awareness Month, let these insights serve as a guiding beacon, inspiring us to strive for personal resilience and a thriving future.
Karen Mangia, Host of Success from Anywhere Podcast, proposed strategies suitable for challenging times:
- Pause for 60-90 seconds to counteract stress.
- Ponder what kindness one can extend to oneself during difficult moments.
- Prioritize one small, self-nurturing step each day.
Cultivating Resilience Through Confidence, Mindfulness, and Connection
Believing in one's ability to surmount obstacles serves as the foundational step in resilience. As one's confidence grows, so does resilience. Karen Mangia, in reflecting on her upbringing, highlights the link between confidence and humility: "Confidence is simply self-trust."
Stevi Gable Carr, Founder and CEO of Wise Wellness Guild, highlights the importance of renewal for resilience: "Intentionally allowing space for grounding and realignment is crucial for cultivating resilience."
Resilience can only flourish in partnership with rest and renewal. Renewal fuels our energy, allowing personal growth and the motivation to tackle challenges when they arise.
Historical leaders serve as living testaments to the power of resilience. By embracing these strategies, we can nurture our resilience, just as these leaders have throughout their lives.
