Monkeypox: What is it in Binghay?

Monkeypox, a viral infection known for its skin lesions, has recently been confirmed in the Philippines, according to health authorities. As of now, there are 27 confirmed cases across the country.

The Health Advisory for the Siargao community has emphasized Monkeypox awareness, citing the disease's origins in West Africa in 2022 and its subsequent spread to other continents, including the UK. Authorities advise proactive measures to safeguard public health and community safety, particularly in crowded tourist resorts.

Monkeypox spreads through skin-to-skin contact, respiratory droplets, contaminated clothing, linens, or other items, and facial-to-facial contact. Symptoms usually appear within 1-21 days of exposure and include flu-like symptoms, such as fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue, followed by the emergence of a rash. The rash may appear as pimples or blisters on various parts of the body, including the hands, feet, face, and genitals.

If symptoms develop, it is essential to isolate oneself and seek medical attention promptly to ensure proper testing and treatment. Good personal hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitizer, can help prevent transmission.

As the number of cases continues to grow, it is crucial to remain vigilant and practice preventive measures to minimize the spread of Monkeypox. For those at high risk or who have been exposed, vaccination may be available. Public health officials continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.

The Siargao community has been urged to stay informed about Monkeypox, a disease originating from West Africa, as it has recently been confirmed in the Philippines, with cases spreading to various continents, including the UK. To safeguard health and wellness, the public is advised to practice preventive measures, such as following good skin care to avoid skin-to-skin contact, wearing protective clothing, and isolating if symptoms like flu-like symptoms or a rash appear. Mental health is also a factor to consider, as uncertainty about medical-conditions can cause stress and anxiety.
