Part I: A Fresh Breeze in Television: Patrick KalupaSpeaks Up

Actor Patrick Kalupa, best known for his engaging portrayal of TV doctor "Dr. Nice," enthusiastically approves of the current trend in German television series. During a conversation with dpa, the 45-year-old Berlin native shared his thoughts on how mental health issues are no longer taboo in the world of television.

In the past, mental illnesses often appeared in a stereotypical and stigmatized manner, primarily linked to criminal elements. Thankfully, those days are behind us, Kalupa said, expressing his gratitude that such misrepresentation is no longer the norm.

Part II: Feeling the Pressure: Dr. Moritz Neiss' Emotional Turmoil

The upcoming season of "Dr. Nice" (airing Sunday, May 11, 8:15 PM on ZDF) will delve further into this reality. Dr. Moritz Neiss, the character played by Kalupa, will seek the help of a psychologist due to his mounting stress levels. After suffering a severe accident, Neiss, once a successful star surgeon, finds himself facing not only physical but also psychological challenges.

"The character's journey reflects a more modern, empathetic, and nuanced approach to depression, bringing a touch of humor and lightness to the topic," Kalupa shared.

Part III: Breaking the Stigma: Opening Up About Depression

Depression was once a significant stigma, with people hesitant to discuss it, especially when it came to mental disorders. "It was a mark of shame," Kalupa said. The tragic death of footballer Robert Enke in 2009 brought this issue into the public spotlight, encouraging more open conversations about depression and raising awareness about available help and the importance of supportive environments.

Part IV: Laughter and Love in Cold Water

Despite the heavier themes, the new season of "Dr. Nice" offers comedic relief. In the first new episode, titled "Old Scars," Kalupa's character shares a memorable underwater love scene with his co-star, Brigitte Zeh. Preparing for this challenging scene, the actors had to embrace six-degree cold water—and their breaths—while maintaining an air of romance. The result, according to Kalupa, was nothing short of fantastic.
