New Year's Eve celebrations in Germany will see a change this year, as the federal government has imposed a ban on the sale and use of fireworks from December 29 to 31.

The decision, made by the federal chancellor and the heads of the states on December 13, was implemented by Horst Seehofer, the Federal Interior Minister, by decree. This ban applies not only to fireworks sold in physical stores but also to online orders, with deliveries suspended during the ban period.

The ban includes popular items such as firecrackers and rockets. This measure is aimed at reducing accidents and injuries, particularly in the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Although there is no nationwide organization that officially banned the sale of New Year's Eve fireworks in 2022, during the pandemic years, including 2020/2021 and 2021/2022, sales restrictions were implemented. These restrictions, health-related measures primarily aimed at reducing accidents and injuries, were noted by the German Ophthalmological Society (DOG) in December 2022, to have significantly reduced eye injuries.

While the ban on fireworks is in place, the German Hospital Association sees excessive alcohol consumption as a greater risk for crowded emergency rooms on New Year's Eve. Gerald Gaß, the president of the German Hospital Association, stated this to Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland. He expects a quiet New Year's Eve, resulting in fewer hospital admissions.

As the nation prepares for a subdued New Year's Eve, the focus shifts towards safe and responsible celebrations, ensuring a peaceful start to the new year.
