"Marked by blood on the wall": Alberta teenager becomes victim of violent online collective, numbered 764
In the digital age, a new threat has emerged, targeting the most vulnerable members of our society. The extremist sextortion and predator network known as "764" is a decentralized group that has caused alarm worldwide, including in Canada.
Classified as a terror-level threat by the FBI and U.S. Department of Justice, 764 primarily targets children and teenagers, particularly those aged 8 to 17, with a focus on those suffering from mental health issues or social isolation. The network operates through various platforms like Discord, Roblox, Minecraft, and Telegram.
The activities of 764 are horrific and designed to manipulate and exploit young people. They groom children via gaming and social platforms, escalating coercion and abuse. Members force victims to create and share sexually abusive content, self-harm, and even harm animals and family members. The network then uses such graphic materials to blackmail victims into further degrading acts. They also resort to threats such as swatting (sending armed police to a victim’s location) or doxing (publicly revealing private information) to isolate and control victims while fulfilling the social status or sadistic desires of group members.
Canadian law enforcement is working closely with international partners, including the FBI, to combat this threat. While specific Canadian operations against 764 are not detailed, the country has been part of international cooperation efforts against online child sexual exploitation networks. Canadian agencies likely utilize intelligence sharing with the FBI and other international law enforcement to track members, protect vulnerable youth, and make arrests through cybercrime units focused on violent crimes against children.
One such case has shaken a rural Alberta community. A 14-year-old girl was targeted by the group, resulting in self-harm and the carving of symbols of the group "764" into her legs. The girl's mother, fearing for her family's safety, including her young siblings, has faced an exhausting and frustrating battle for help from the local school board, health-care system, multiple mental health agencies, and local MLAs.
The RCMP urges individuals to report any suspicious activity to local police or the RCMP National Security Information Network. They have stated that Ideologically Motivated Violent Extremism (IMVE) groups, like 764, are a major issue and societal problem.
Private investigator Becca Spinks, who has personally experienced death threats when investigating certain individuals believed to be part of the group, has seen first-hand the horrific threats, blackmail, and manipulation used by 764. She emphasizes the importance of reporting such activities to law enforcement to protect children and bring those responsible to justice.
The mother in Alberta, who has not disclosed her or her family's location for safety reasons, has spoken out to create more awareness about the group "764". She hopes her story will help others recognize the signs of potential involvement and encourage them to seek help and report any suspicious activity.
