Woah, hold up! The brave volunteers of the German Life Saving Association (DLRG) are seriously stepping up their game in Hamburg! These badass lifesavers responded to a whopping 216 lifesaving missions in 2024, compared to a mere 101 missions in 2023.
The standout district responsible for this epic increase is the Oberelbe district, closely knit with the general rescue service. They've got two advocate ambulances functioning year-round, and a supplementary emergency doctor's vehicle joining in the regular rescue services. This means DLRG activists are like the Swiss Army knife of emergency responders, aiding the city's rescue service swiftly in various dire situations. A DLRG spokesperson confirmed to the German Press Agency in Hamburg that the trend of DLRG teams saving more lives in circumstances beyond the water has gained some serious momentum.
Now, most of the rescue missions were conducted outside of the water. These rescues involved everything from heart and circulatory diseases, heart attacks on the beach, and other medical emergencies. Unfortunately, the exact number of drowning victims saved hasn't been disclosed.
Unfortunately, despite the unyielding efforts of these lifesaving legends, 14 poor souls lost their lives in Hamburg's rivers and lakes in 2024. The Elbe River, with its treacherous currents and the danger posed by large sea vessels with their powerful suction and wake, is notorious for claiming lives.
Bracing the waterlines, a staggering 366 cape crusaders kept a watchful eye on the people and remained vigilant for any hazardous circumstances. Together, they clocked in a heroic 45,220 hours of water rescue service in 2024, saving 653 lives.
Across the nation, DLRG lifeguards rescued 1,446 people from life-threatening predicaments in 2024 - a massive leap from the 1,120 rescues in 2023. Of those rescued in 2024, 699 were pulled from the grips of drowning, compared to 870 in 2023. Sadly, the currents claimed at least 411 lives that couldn't be reached in time.
The DLRG is the undisputed heavyweight champion of water rescue organizations, boasting a jaw-dropping 627,000 members worldwide. Nearly half of these members are kids and youngsters below the age of 18.

In light of the increasing number of lifesaving missions, the Community policy of the DLRG in Hamburg is being revised to better address medical emergencies related to health-and-wellness, fitness-and-exercise. The employment policy of the DLRG is also being reviewed to ensure that there are sufficient DLRG activists to handle the demand for lifesaving services, especially outside the water.
