Lessons from Lower Decks are Slowly Taking Shape in Practice

"The evolution of our protagonists in 'Of Gods and Angels' showcases their significant growth over the past five seasons, yet the final season's repeated contemplations on this theme might become rather repetitive."

Lessons from Lower Decks are Slowly Taking Shape in Practice

In the latest episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks, titled "Of Gods and Angels," the focus shifts from the main quartet to a new character: Ensign Olly, a demigod reminiscent of the alien-Greek-god character from the original Star Trek series episode "Who Mourns for Adonais?"

Olly, the newest crewmember of the USS Cerritos, finds himself in a precarious situation when he teams up with Lt. Beckett Mariner to search for the missing child of the orb leader during peace talks between two warring photonic civilizations aboard the Cerritos. His fear of speaking to Mariner early in the episode leads to complications that threaten to escalate the conflict between the Cubes and Orbs.

Meanwhile, Boimler, ever the eager beaver, joins Rutherford in copying alt-Boimler's padd to glean his personality. His efforts to form a friendship with Dr T'Ana, similar to his alt-universe self, do not go as planned. Things do not go as Boimler expects, and his beard becomes more prominent in the episode, a visual testament to his growing confidence.

The episode serves as a reminder that growth and self-reflection require constant openness to learning. Boimler's jokingly rejected the season's lesson of being open and communicative, but his actions serve as a reminder that change is a process, not a destination.

Mariner, on the other hand, sees a kinship with Olly's brash and impulsive behavior, which is reminiscent of her own personality when she was first introduced. Her eagerness to help Olly is met with resistance from Ransom and Captain Freeman, who want her off the Cerritos and potentially out of Starfleet.

The episode reflects on characters outside of the key quartet in relation to the thematic lesson, presenting a fresh perspective on the recurring thematic lesson of the season. However, it does not focus on the main quartet learning and resolving the thematic lesson, leaving the door open for further exploration in the next few episodes.

As the final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks continues, it's clear that the importance of openness and honesty among the characters is a central theme. The show continues to deliver humorous and thought-provoking episodes that keep fans engaged and eager for more.
