Leader of a suicide advocacy group ends life as per self-professed beliefs
Farewell to Florian Willet: Head of Suicide Organization Takes His Own Life
In an unexpected turn of events, Florian Willet, the president of The Last Resort, a Swiss euthanasia organization, has tragically ended his life. The organization announced this, while the Schaffhausen public prosecutor's office confirmed the news of his demise.
Investigations were underway against Willet and others, involving charges of incitement and assistance in suicide. He was linked to the first suicide using the Sarco device, a controversial device that Swiss authorities consider non-compliant. Willet was detained following this incident, and he reportedly underwent a harrowing experience.
The organization disclosed that Willet took his life on May 5, in Germany. The trauma he faced during his imprisonment and the accusations that followed supposedly left him deeply scarred. He was released from custody in December, after approximately 70 days of pre-trial detention. Other accused individuals' investigations continue, according to the public prosecutor's office.
Suicide assistance is legal in Switzerland, provided the helpers lack selfish motives. The device Sarco, a capsule where a person can lie down, press a button to initiate nitrogen inlet, and ultimately suffocate, is not in compliance with Swiss authorities' regulations.
Authorities had issued warnings to Sarco's creators prior to its use. The first user was a 64-year-old American woman. The Institute of Forensic Medicine of the Canton of Zurich has now made the autopsy report public, but the public prosecutor's office remains silent about the status of the probe.

While Sarco's creators received warnings before its use, Willet's tragedy indicates that even the most well-intentioned individuals may struggle with the emotional toll of promoting and facilitating death. It serves as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between empathy, assisted dying laws, and the human psyche.
