Latisse: Effective for Glaucoma & Eyelash Growth, But Know the Risks

Latisse, a medication containing bimatoprost, is used for two purposes: treating glaucoma and promoting eyelash growth. However, its use comes with potential side effects and safety considerations.

If you have glaucoma and are considering Latisse, consult your ophthalmologist first. For eyelash application, remove contact lenses before use and wait 15 minutes before reinserting. Bimatoprost works by creating more hair follicles during the hair-growing cycle, but it's only FDA-approved for upper eyelashes. It may spread to lower lashes upon blinking. Side effects can fade when discontinued, but prolonged use can cause permanent iris darkening and periorbital fat atrophy. Potential side effects include eyelid itching, dry eye, eyelid darkening, and eye/eyelid swelling.

Latisse is effective for both medicinal and cosmetic purposes, but it must be used properly to minimise side effects. Always consult a healthcare provider and follow their instructions. Bimatoprost, the active ingredient, is a prostaglandin that works by expanding eye channels to reduce pressure and promoting hair growth. Its use on the lower eyelid is not typical and may not be FDA-approved.
