Latest Health Advice for Spring 2025

As the fall semester approaches, Oberlin College is taking steps to ensure a safe and healthy academic environment for its students. The college's current recommendations focus on following the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to prevent the spread of cold, flu, COVID-19, and norovirus on campus.

Vaccination and Good Hygiene Practices

Staying up to date with COVID-19 and influenza vaccines is a key prevention strategy, as recommended by Oberlin College and the CDC. Good hygiene practices, such as frequent handwashing with soap and water, especially after sneezing or coughing, before eating, and after using the restroom, are also emphasized to reduce the spread of norovirus and respiratory viruses.

Respiratory Etiquette, Cleaning, and Disinfecting

Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow, and regular cleaning of frequently touched surfaces, can help reduce the presence of viruses on campus. Student Health strongly recommends wearing a mask indoors and/or in crowded spaces for the first two weeks back on campus.

Staying Home When Sick

Avoiding campus and contact with others when experiencing symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal illness is also crucial. Norovirus symptoms, which include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, fever, headache, and body aches, should prompt individuals to stay home and not prepare food for others.

Consulting Student Health Services

While specific Oberlin College protocols beyond vaccination recommendations were not detailed, adherence to general public health measures, such as those mentioned above, is strongly advised. For the most detailed and updated campus-specific guidelines, it would be best to consult Oberlin College’s Student Health Services or official college communications directly.

Free Flu Vaccines and Hand Hygiene

Flu vaccines are available at Student Health free of charge and with no need for an appointment. Washing your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after using the toilet, and when handling food, is also encouraged.

Walk-in Hours and Norovirus Information

Walk-in hours at Student Health are available Monday through Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. Norovirus can be transmitted through contaminated food and water, person-to-person contact, contaminated surfaces, and aerosolized particles. Treatment for norovirus focuses on supportive care and symptom management, including hydration, rest, and small meals/snacks.

Hand Sanitizer and Norovirus

It's important to note that hand sanitizer alone does not work well against norovirus. Regular cleaning and sanitizing surfaces with a cleaner approved for norovirus is recommended.
