News Article: DLRG Wiesbaden and Schierstein Rescue a Weakened Swimmer in the Rhine

On Sunday, volunteer activists from the DLRG Wiesbaden and Schierstein district association were called to action after a weakened swimmer was spotted in the Rhine near Walluf.

According to a press release issued by the PD Rheingau-Taunus today, the affected person was later rescued from the water by the crew of a rescue boat dispatched from the DLRG station at the Schiersteiner harbor tip. The individual was reported to be weakened, experiencing cramps, and appearing to be under the influence of drugs.

Upon receiving the alert, the Integrated Control Center Wiesbaden coordinated the deployment of the DLRG's resources, also informing the Rheingau-Taunus district. Shortly after, the person was handed over to the crew of a rescue vehicle and the police on land.

The role of a water rescue service, such as the DLRG Wiesbaden and the Schierstein district association, is to provide emergency response and rescue operations in water environments. They operate by deploying trained personnel and specialized equipment to perform rescue, search, and recovery missions in rivers, harbors, or open waters.

In practice, the DLRG (German Life Saving Association) is immediately alerted during water emergencies, coordinating with fire departments and other rescue services to conduct search and rescue operations on the water. This often involves sending rescue swimmers, boats, and in some cases divers to search for missing persons or assist individuals in distress.

The DLRG’s operational effectiveness depends on close coordination with victims, other rescue agencies, and timely deployment of resources, combining technical skill with preventive and emergency measures. Local branches, such as Wiesbaden and Schierstein, provide vital regional response capabilities tailored for their water environments, whether inland waters or larger rivers.

The DLRG Wiesbaden and Schierstein district associations serve as volunteer and professional units specialized in water rescue, combining technical rescue operations, preventive training, and coordination with other emergency services to manage water-related emergencies effectively.

It is important to note that the DLRG station in Wiesbaden is staffed on Saturdays from 13:00 to 18:00 and on Sundays and holidays from 10:00 to 18:00. The fire department and DLRG strongly emphasize the danger of swimming in the Rhine, particularly due to the strong current and shipping risk. They recommend using designated swimming areas, supervised lakes, or public pools for one's own safety.
