Kroger and Walmart's chicken fettuccine alfredo causes illness in 17 and fatality in 4 due to Listeria contamination.
In a significant public health alert, BrucePac, a Woodburn, Oregon-based pre-cooked meat producer, announced a recall on October 9, 2024, affecting products sold across major U.S. grocery stores. The recall was issued in response to a Listeria monocytogenes outbreak linked to FreshRealm's chicken fettuccine alfredo meals.
As of June 18, 2025, the outbreak has resulted in 17 reported cases across 13 states. Unfortunately, 16 of those infected have been hospitalized, and there have been 3 reported deaths in Illinois, Michigan, and Texas. Additionally, one pregnancy-associated illness resulted in fetal loss. The illnesses’ onset dates range from July 24, 2024, to May 10, 2025.
The affected states include Texas (with 3 cases), Michigan and Louisiana (2 cases each), and Nevada, Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida (1 case each). The outbreak is linked to FreshRealm chicken fettuccine alfredo meals sold in the refrigerated section of Walmart and Kroger stores, marketed under the Marketside and Home Chef brand names.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS), along with the CDC and FDA, is actively investigating the outbreak using epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback data. They identified the outbreak strain from routine sampling on March 19, 2025. The source of contamination is still under investigation, including inspections and ingredient testing, but no contamination has been found in FDA-regulated ingredients so far.
In response to the outbreak, FreshRealm issued a recall on June 17, 2025, for affected chicken fettuccine alfredo products. The recalled products include 32.8-oz. tray packages of Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine, best-by date 06/27/25 or earlier, 12.3-oz. tray packages of Marketside Grilled Chicken Alfredo with Fettuccine (with broccoli), best-by date 06/26/25 or earlier, and 12.5-oz. tray packages of Home Chef Heat & Eat Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo, best-by date 06/19/25 or earlier.
Consumers are advised not to eat recalled products. USDA-FSIS and FDA continue to monitor and collaborate with federal and local partners to ensure public safety and provide updates as the investigation progresses.
This outbreak remains under active investigation, and more updates are expected as authorities continue to track the source and distribution. Meanwhile, another recall has been announced by Twin City Foods Inc., affecting frozen corn and mixed vegetables due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. This recall, announced on August 24, 2023, involves not-ready-to-eat frozen vegetables in retail bags, affecting brands such as Kroger, Food Lion, and Signature.
