Italy Continues Humanitarian Efforts for Gaza's Injured Children

Italy has taken a leading role in providing urgent medical care to Palestinian children from Gaza, with the latest evacuation involving 31 children and 83 family members, making a total of 114 people. This is the largest single medical evacuation so far, as of August 13, 2025.

Since January 2024, Italy has carried out 14 medical evacuation missions, bringing a total of 181 patients (mostly children) and 396 accompanying family members to Italy for medical treatment. This brings the total number of evacuees to 577 people.

The patients in these Italian medical missions suffer from severe injuries such as amputations, head trauma, brain hemorrhage, congenital diseases, cancer (including leukemia), and severe malnutrition—conditions that cannot be adequately treated in Gaza. They are dispersed among hospitals in regions including Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardy, Tuscany, Umbria, and Veneto.

Upon arrival, these patients and their families are supported through Italy’s Integrated Reception System, granting residence permits and access to healthcare and schooling during their stay.

In addition to the medical evacuations, the Italian Defense Ministry has sent the hospital ship Vulcano to the area and conducted medical flights for injured children. The Spanish news agency EFE reported these actions by the Italian Defense Ministry.

Moreover, the Italian Foreign Ministry stated that 20 trucks carrying 350 tons of flour entered Gaza on Monday.

Italy ranks fourth globally in these medical evacuations from Gaza, working closely with WHO and other international bodies to prioritize patients with the most urgent medical needs.

Thousands of people have protested against the war in Gaza in various cities around the world, demonstrating the global concern for the ongoing conflict and the humanitarian efforts being made to alleviate its impact on innocent civilians.

Table:

| Category | Number of People | |----------------------------------|--------------------| | Palestinian children evacuated (August 2025 flight) | 31 | | Accompanying family members (August 2025 flight) | 83 | | Total in August 2025 evacuation | 114 | | Total patients evacuated by Italy since Jan 2024 | 181 | | Total accompanying persons (since Jan 2024) | 396 | | Total people evacuated by Italy since Jan 2024 | 577 | | Total Palestinians from Gaza received in Italy (including family reunification) since start of 2023 war | 917 |

Science plays a crucial role in evaluating and treating medical-conditions of the evacuated children from Gaza, contributing to their health-and-wellness during their recovery in Italian hospitals. The increased number of Palestinian children being brought to Italy for medical treatment underlines the need for further humanitarian intervention and international collaboration.
