Is it prohibited for students in Baden-Württemberg schools to wear masks?
In a recent development, there has been some confusion among citizens regarding mask regulations in schools in Baden-Württemberg. A report gave the impression that a mask ban exists at schools in the region, but this is not the case.
The report, which was published in the "Southwest Press" in Ulm on Tuesday, titled "Authority bans masks at schools," has caused some concern. However, the Presidency of Karlsruhe has issued a clarification regarding the mask issue in a press release.
Contrary to the report, there is no mask ban at schools in the district of Karlsruhe. School principals are responsible for implementing the mask regulation at their schools. For health reasons, students have the possibility to wear masks, and the decision will be made at the school level.
The regulation for public schools, as stated in § 72 paragraph 3a of the School Act, generally prohibits students from covering their faces at school events. However, this regulation does not apply if mask-wearing is required to fulfill a legal or regulatory obligation, and there is no such obligation to wear masks.
The Presidency of Karlsruhe denies issuing a mask ban at schools. They also stated that there is no disagreement with higher ministries on the mask issue. The protection of vulnerable students and teachers is particularly important, especially in times of numerous respiratory illnesses and a currently high number of COVID infections.
As of the latest information from July 2025, there is a mask requirement in schools in Baden-Württemberg, including during breaks. This indicates that specific mask regulations for schools are still in place considering the current health circumstances and COVID-19 infections.
It is essential to note that the regulation for civil servants, as stated in § 34 paragraph 2 of the Law on the Regulation of the Status Rights of Female and Male Civil Servants in the Federal States (BeamtenStG), applies to this situation.
The Presidency of Karlsruhe has emphasised that the health and safety of students and teachers remain their top priority. They encourage everyone to follow the mask regulations and other health guidelines to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses.
