Infestation of Tapinoma magnum pest in Edenkoben now under effective management
In a recent announcement, Martin Eberhard, the First Deputy Mayor of Verbandsgemeinde Edenkoben, revealed that the administration's ant control measures have shown a significant effect, leading to the destruction of two super colonies of the invasive Tapinoma Magnum ant species.
The ant control strategy employed in Edenkoben included the use of both nematodes and diatomaceous earth. Nematodes, tiny worms that feed on ant eggs and larvae, and diatomaceous earth, a powder derived from diatoms that damages ants' exoskeletons and causes dehydration, were combined to contain and push back the population of these pests.
The presence of Tapinoma Magnum ants was first confirmed by the Verbandsgemeinde administration in May. Since then, more than 70 colonies of this species have been located and successfully eliminated. Two of these super colonies, in Hainfeld and Burrweiler, have been completely destroyed.
However, it is unclear whether the measures alone led to the ants' retreat, or if the cooler weather also contributed. Martin Eberhard advises remaining vigilant, as a recurrence of the Tapinoma Magnum ant colonies cannot be ruled out.
In response to the infestation, the Verbandsgemeinde administration provided affected residents with the control agent diatomaceous earth. The district office that successfully controlled the Tapinoma magnum ant infestation is the city administration of Kehl, which in early autumn 2024 deployed a hot water spraying device operated by municipal staff to contain the supercolonies of this invasive ant species.
The biological control procedure in Edenkoben has shown promising results, and Martin Eberhard stated that the measures taken have shown an effect. Despite this, the Verbandsgemeinde Edenkoben administration has not provided any new control agents since the destruction of the super colonies.
The Tapinoma Magnum ant species spreads particularly in warmer temperatures, making it a concern for many communities. The successful control measures in Edenkoben offer a potential solution for other areas facing similar infestations. Martin Eberhard's announcement serves as a reminder that proactive and effective ant control strategies are essential in maintaining a pest-free environment.
