Soaring Lyme Disease Cases in Berlin: What's Behind the Increase?

Summer's here, and so are the ticks in Berlin. The city's health officials are reporting a surge in Lyme disease cases compared to previous years, with 206 cases as of June 18 — that's an average of about 50 more cases during the same period from 2015 to 2019.

Ticks are tiny arachnids that thrive in warm and humid conditions.

The reason behind this uptick? A perfect storm of factors, climate change being the main culprit, according to a spokesperson from the State Office for Health (Lageso). A warmer climate results in milder winters and higher temperatures in spring, which extend the active period of ticks and boost their numbers. This heightened tick activity, in turn, increases the chances of human contact. Human outdoor behavior may also play a role.

To minimize the risk of infection after a tick bite, prompt action is key. Lageso recommends removing the tick as soon as possible, as the infection risk remains low during the first hours after the bite.

In the past week alone, 23 cases have been reported, and two individuals have developed Lyme arthritis, a joint inflammation primarily affecting the knees.

Symptoms of a Borrelia infection are often subtle and may include a red ring around the bite site (known as erythema migrans), localized swelling, and reddish-violet skin discoloration. More general symptoms like fever, headache, and muscle or joint pain may also be present.

If you suspect you've been bitten and are experiencing symptoms, seek medical attention without delay. The infection can lead to severe complications such as lymph node inflammation, joint issues, and nervous system disorders. Unfortunately, there's currently no vaccine against Borreliosis.

Berlin has reported 972 cases in 2024, 984 in 2023, and 807 in 2022.

Interestingly, the rise in Lyme disease cases can be traced to two intertwined factors: climate change and changes in human outdoor behavior. Climate change has lengthened the active period and expanded the range of ticks, their primary transmitters. Warmer temperatures and milder winters have allowed them to live through winter and become active earlier in spring and later in autumn. This leads to a larger and more active tick population[2].

Changes in human behavior also contribute to the rise. As people engage in more outdoor activities during spring, especially in natural settings like parks and forests, they are exposed to tick habitats. Urban expansion and lifestyle changes might bring people closer to tick-infested areas. Public awareness and outdoor behavior modifications may not have kept pace with the changing risk, leading to increased tick bites and infection rates[2][1].

  • The surge in Lyme disease cases in Berlin can be attributed to both climate change and changes in human outdoor behavior.
  • Climate change, particularly warmer temperatures and milder winters, has prolonged the active period of ticks and expanded their range, resulting in a larger and more active tick population.
  • An increase in outdoor activities during spring, together with urban expansion and lifestyle changes, might bring people closer to tick-infested areas, contributing to the rise in Lyme disease cases.
