Hubertus Mass in Luzern Sparks Animal Welfare Outcry
A Hubertus Mass, led by Gudrun Dötsch and the 'Naturhornbläser Auerhahn Luzern', is set to take place at the Franziskanerkirche Luzern on September 13th at 4:00 PM. However, this event has sparked controversy among animal welfare groups.
Hubertus Masses, popular among hobby hunters, are criticized for being incompatible with Christian ethics of respect for life. Saint Hubertus, the patron saint of hunters, himself became an opponent of hunting after an encounter with a stag that spoke to him with the form of Christ between its antlers. The IG Wild beim Wild, an animal welfare group, has slammed the event and its organizers.
Hubertus Masses often mark the start of driven and special hunts, where even inexperienced hunters chase wild animals through the woods, causing injury and death. Celebrating such a service sends a wrong signal, as it symbolically blesses the systematic killing of defenseless animals. Hunting, far from regulating animal populations, can lead to increased birth rates and population growth. Moreover, up to two-thirds of animals may not die immediately during driven hunts, suffering for days before dying painfully if not found during the follow-up search.
The upcoming Hubertus Mass in Luzern has raised concerns among animal welfare advocates. They argue that the event conflicts with Christian ethics and contributes to the suffering of animals. Hunting, they maintain, is not an effective means of animal population control.
