HPAI Resurfaces in Minnesota: First Poultry Outbreak Since April 2025

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has resurfaced in Minnesota, with the first detection in poultry since April 23, 2025. The Minnesota Board of Animal Health has confirmed the outbreak in a Redwood County commercial turkey flock of 28,000 birds.

The Minnesota Department of Health is monitoring the health of individuals who have had direct contact with infected animals or their environment. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources urges the public to report dead waterfowl (five or more birds in one place) to their hotline at 888-646-6367. Similarly, sick domestic or wild birds should be reported to the Minnesota Avian Influenza Hotline at 833-454-0156 or through an online form.

Experts from the University of Minnesota anticipate numerous cases of HPAI this fall due to increased rainfall and widespread ponding. The University, along with the Minnesota DNR and the University of Minnesota Raptor Center, are closely monitoring local wildlife populations for positive cases. The Minnesota Board of Animal Health serves as the official source of information for Minnesota's response to HPAI, posting cases on their outbreak dashboard and information page.

To reduce the risk of avian flu, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health recommends practicing biosecurity, minimizing contact with wild waterfowl, and cleaning bird feeders regularly. Additional cases of HPAI have since emerged in Minnesota and other states, highlighting the importance of vigilance and prompt reporting.
