Hospital blaze fatality: patient ignites bedding material resulting in inferno

Hamburg — The horror unfolded at the Marienkrankenhaus in Hamburg, where a smoking pillow on a patient's bed is suspected to have sparked a devastating fire that has left up to four fatalities and at least 34 injured. The main suspect, a senior citizen of 72, is believed to have intentionally set the fire in a moment of non-responsibility or reduced responsibility, according to a spokesperson for the Hamburg public prosecutor's office.

A judge ruled on Monday to provisionally commit the man to a psychiatric clinic for arson resulting in death. The man remained silent during the hearing, leaving the future legality of this assessment uncertain for now. "The investigations are still in their infancy," a police spokesperson confirmed.

Uncovering the Suspect

Eyewitnesses helped lead investigators to the perpetrator, who was apprehended in the hospital the previous day.

Saturday night's conflagration in the Hohenfelde district claimed the lives of three elderly patients, aged 84, 85, and 87. At least 34 individuals were injured, one critically so. On Sunday, a 72-year-old woman residing in the building above the geriatric ward also perished. It remains unclear if she succumbed to the fire or another cause.

As more time passes, the number of injuries could still increase as victims might only show symptoms later and seek medical attention. "The total number of all those injured by the fire is not yet definitively known," police reported. The blaze originated in a ground-floor room in the geriatric ward and soon spread to the façade above due to the rapid spread of smoke.

The Catholic Marienkrankenhaus, with approximately 600 beds, is one of Hamburg's largest clinics, treating around 93,000 patients each year. Its primary focus is on caring for the elderly.

Memorial Service and Condolence Book

On Monday, a service of remembrance was held in the clinic for the deceased victims. All staff members were invited to attend, with a condolence book also available for hospital employees in the chapel. Further services are planned for relatives and victims during the week. The pastoral care organized these events.
