Highest Risk Regions for Tick Encounters Include South Ural
Tick-Infested Chelyabinsk Region Holds High Risk for Residents
Getting bitten by a tick has become a common health concern for residents in the Chelyabinsk region. As reported by "Novyi Den", an alarming number of individuals - around 309,5 thousand people - have sought medical assistance due to tick bites since the start of the season.
The regions with the highest incidences of tick bites, apart from Chelyabinsk, include Sverdlovsk, Kemerovo, Kirov, Tomsk, the Udmurt Republic, Krasnoyarsk Krai, and various other areas.
The Russian health authorities have taken steps to control the situation by carrying out acariicidal treatments across the country. So far, over 206,7 thousand hectares have been treated, covering 92.9% of the planned volume.
The increase in tick activity has serious implications for the health of the residents. Ticks in Chelyabinsk, situated in the southern Urals with its diverse mix of forest and steppe landscapes, pose a significant threat due to the region's mild climate and ideal tick habitats. The warmer, humid summers, in particular, create favorable conditions for Ixodid ticks (hard ticks), which are culprits for the transmission of various diseases, including tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme disease.
Additionally, human activities such as agriculture, forestry, and recreation activities often lead people deeper into tick habitats, increasing the risk of exposure. To complicate matters, it is likely that the Chelyabinsk region has a developed surveillance system in place, resulting in more documented cases of tick activity compared to other regions.
