Healthiest Eating Plan to Extend Lifespan to its Maximum
In a groundbreaking study published in Nature Medicine at the end of March, researchers have emphasized the importance of a plant-based and balanced diet for healthy aging. The large-scale study, which spanned many years and followed over 105,000 participants, has found that those who followed the Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) or the Mediterranean diet had almost twice the chance of being healthy at 75.
The study, however, does not provide specific details on the eight health criteria used in the analysis of the 31 European cities. Dr. Nadine Gutmann, an immunologist at the Austrian institute SIPCAN, explains that a diet of fresh, minimally processed foods can prevent chronic diseases and significantly improve the quality of life in old age.
The study does not reveal the exact age at which people start to feel 'old', but it does find a clear link between the consumption of industrially processed products and the chance of reaching the age of 70 in good physical and mental condition. Particularly popular in Austria are pastries and cured meats, which account for around a third of the daily calories, well above the EU average of 27%.
Two Austrian cities stand out in particular in the analysis of healthiest places. The study highlights the importance of a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and healthy fats. Sugar, red meat, and highly processed foods should be consumed as rarely as possible, according to the study.
The study's findings suggest that a healthy diet can lead to a longer and better life. People who reach the age of 100 often share certain characteristics and a particular mindset. Being healthy at 75, according to the study, means being free from chronic diseases, mentally alert, and physically active.
The study does not provide specific details on what constitutes a "balanced" diet, and it does not reveal the exact age at which people start to feel 'old'. However, the study's implications for healthy aging and the benefits of a balanced diet are clear. The study's authors have yet to be identified in the search results.
