Health Ministry announces empowerment of patients to oversee personal medical records

The Ministry of Health in Kazakhstan is developing a unified medical data repository, aimed at making all health information accessible via the electronic health passport in the eGov system by 2026. This digital solution aims to replace the current practice of carrying paper copies of certain information, offering a more efficient and organised approach.

The unified medical data repository, announced by Vice Minister of Health Yerbol Ospanov, is being developed to accumulate clinical and health information of Kazakhstan's residents. The repository will initially include patients who received services under the GHI program and other clinical data outside of GHI.

Currently, approximately 70% of medical organisations in Kazakhstan have been integrated with the unified medical data repository system. Once fully implemented, citizens in Kazakhstan will manage their own data and decide who to share their data with and who to grant access to in the unified health data repository.

This digital solution is expected to improve the understanding of a patient's health status in clinics, providing a more comprehensive and accurate picture of a patient's medical history. The Ministry of Health has not explicitly named the Minister overseeing the development of this repository, but has made announcements about the progress of the project.

It is important to note that Liter.kz reported on this news, offering updates on the development and implementation of the unified medical data repository. The current practice of obtaining patients' health information from different organisations by carrying paper copies will be replaced by this repository, which will accumulate all clinical and medical information of Kazakhstan's residents.

Citizens will have control over their own data, deciding who to share it with and who to grant access to, ensuring health privacy and confidentiality. The unified medical data repository is a significant step towards modernising Kazakhstan's healthcare system and improving the overall health outcomes for its residents.
